Old Town Guesthouse Malacca

Malacca is a popular tourist destination on the west coast of Malaysia roughly half way between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.  There are a high number of guesthouses and hostels, with new ones opening up every month, so finding the right one can be a challenge.  We stayed in a guesthouse that has been regularly voted one of the top in Malacca.  Old Town Guesthouse is a family run business near the little India area of Malacca where the owners LeeSun and Chris have created a great place for all types of holiday makers from solo travellers to families.

Atmosphere

The first thing you notice when being shown around by LeeSun is the vast amount of space. There are 2 huge lounge areas. One is a large kitchen/living room with a tv and breakfast/dining table, the other is a lovely chilled out seating area with fans, plants, a fish tank and place for hanging out your washing. The guesthouse is also a family home and whereas it is not suitable for people wanting to party all night, it is a great place for families or for people looking to relax with fellow travellers after a hard days sightseeing.

Rooms and facilities

All rooms are clean and beds comfortable. We took a double room with a/c and attached bathroom for MYR55 but you can get fan rooms for less and dorms for MYR12. Rates include a simple breakfast of toast, jams, fruit and more often than not a tasty treat such as homemade banana cake prepared by LeeSun the night before. For a small charge you can use the washing machine and the guest fridge is kept well stocked with cold drinks and beer, served on an honesty basis.  They provide free tea, coffee and water all day and on top of that the wifi is speedy and also free.

Location and surrounding

The guesthouse is on Jelan Temenggong near the historic Bukit China and is about a 15 minute walk to the famous Jonker street.  When looking for a tasty meal look no further than across the street where there are fabulous hawker food stalls.  The people selling from 6am to 1.30pm are different to the ones selling from 6pm to 1am so be sure to try them for lunch and dinner.  Melaka is a UNESCO world heritage site and is packed with historical sites of interest and a huge variety of museums, including a kite museum, which unfortunately was closed for refurbishment at the time of our visit.
