But the country has a long list of lesser-known gems that offer more peaceful and authentic experiences. If you’re looking to see a different side to the land where the East meets the West, consider some of these hidden treasures.
Patara
Situated on Turkey’s southwest coast, Patara is best known for its 18-kilometre stretch of sandy beach and stunning ancient Lycian ruins. It’s a relatively peaceful town, ideal if you want a quieter holiday to Turkey compared with the busier beach resorts. Patara Beach is one of the best in the country and a protected site for nesting loggerhead turtles.
Beyond the beach, there are thousands of years of history to discover. Explore the impressive remains of Patara’s ancient city, which includes a well-preserved amphitheatre, Roman triumphal arch and remnants of an important Lycian port.
Akyaka
If you’re looking for a charming village escape, far from the bustling cities and big resorts, Akyaka in the Muğla region is a great option. Known for its "Cittaslow" (slow city) status, it’s part of a global network of towns that champion the slow-living lifestyle.
Set against a backdrop of pine-covered mountains, Akyaka stands out from the tourist hotspots with its relaxed atmosphere and stunning surroundings. The town showcases traditional Ula houses, featuring wooden balconies and stone facades that reflect Ottoman-era architecture.
Cirali
Cirali, on the Turquoise Coast, is a hidden paradise for those who find peace in nature. This small village is surrounded by olive and citrus groves, and its beach is backed by the majestic Taurus Mountains. Like Patara, it’s a protected area and an important nesting site for loggerhead turtles.
One of Cirali’s highlights is its proximity to the ancient ruins of Olympos. A short hike from the beach leads you through mesmerising ancient temples, tombs and ruins surrounded by forest. Nearby, there’s even a natural phenomenon named "Chimaera", where an eternal flame emerges from the rocky hillside.
Datça Peninsula
Stretching out between the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, the Datça Peninsula is one of Turkey’s more rugged and unspoilt coastal regions. It’s largely untouched by mass tourism, offering a unique getaway with pristine beaches, hidden coves and picturesque, whitewashed villages.
