So you’re looking for something unusual to do in Chicago? Well you’ve come to the right place. There’s so much on offer in the windy city.
Let’s just jump in to my top unusual things to do in Chicago. I bet you didn’t know some of these existed? I’ve also included some of the latest hotel deals I could find for Chicago.
I’d love to add more to this list so contact me if you have been to any that are worthy of this post!
National Museum of Mexican Art
This museum is located in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood, and is a great chance to experience art from a different culture. There are over 7000 works to see so there’s sure to be something for everyone. It’s also free, and they have a gift shop filled with gifts that are handmade in Mexico. They also run special events such as film nights a Mexican literature festival.
An absolute must for book-lovers, this incredible bookshop has been open since 1984 selling used books “rare, medium and well done”. It’s worth a trip to this place just to listen to the owner John Chandler, but don’t ask him if he has a specific book because he won’t be sure!
This is a destination in itself rather then a quick stop on a shopping trip so leave plenty of time. And watch your step – there are books everywhere!
Weird Chicago Tours
Great if you’re doing other things and want all of your weirdness in one go, Weird Chicago Tours go to all the gangster hangouts and haunted places your could ask for. You also get to hop on and off the bus so you can see everything up close.
Head to the Beach
Not many people know this but there are beaches in Chicago! However the biggest ones can get very crowded on warm summer days – so instead head for one of the Neighbourhood beaches such as Foster Avenue Beach. The Neighbourhood beaches will probably be a little further away, but it’ll be worth it when you get a good spot to set up your picnic blanket. Choose a hotel with overlooking the sea for the perfect view.
One of the most unique experiences Chicago has to offer is turtle racing. Big Joe’s is the place to go – it’s the only time you’ll ever want your bet to be the slowest animal on the track. There’s a great atmosphere and everyone is really friendly so you’re bound to have a great time.
