Skipping across the pond and taking a look around one of the most beautiful countries in Europe is what life’s all about isn’t it? There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re tied to your desk. And there’s no better feeling than throwing off your chains, grabbing a mate, and heading off on the adventure of a lifetime. Here’s everything you need to know to make it happen…
Travel Out Of Season
There’s two great reasons to fly out of season. Firstly, you can make use of the cheap airline tickets the big names put on to try and entice people aboard. Ideal if you want to have plenty of spending money to eat out and sample some of the local wine.
The second reason travelling out of season is awesome, is that it allows you to beat the crowds. Technically you and your mate are both tourists, but you’re going for the adventure; not to stand in line and see the same old sights that everyone flies in to photograph. Don’t bother trying to wake up early so you get a few hours before the crowds descend. Takeoff at a totally different time of year so you can leave the crowds behind for the duration of your trip.
Take a Pocket Phrasebook With You
Talking louder and pointing will get you through some exchanges, but if you only use English then you’re missing out in a big way. The locals aren’t expecting you to speak word-perfect French, so it really doesn’t matter if you can’t.
Make a bit of effort however, and you’ll be able to pick it up so much faster than you think. There’s nothing like being completely immersed in the language and culture of somewhere you visit if you want to take away memories that will last a lifetime.
Don’t Plan Too Much
Every travel guide under the sun will tell you that you need to have planned your holiday within an inch of its life if you’re going to get the most out of it. This might be true if you’re trying to drag the kids around a whole bunch of tourist hotspots, but that’s not what you and your mate are doing.
By all means make a quick mental note of a few of the things you have to see, but don’t go over the top with it. You want to be free to go with the flow, see what’s round every corner, and just get out there and live like the locals.
Travel Light, and Travel at Sensible Times
The one thing with booking flights is that you can become far too obsessed with the price; and forget about the whole experience. Flying home at 11pm might seem like a great way to add an extra day to your trip, but is it worth it? You’ll be walking around the city all day with your bags. So if that extra day will make all the difference, how much extra does it cost to fly early the next morning?
If you really want to save money on your flights, Atlanta to Paris might be a better route than the one you’re thinking of. Just changing your route could be enough to get you a few extra days on the ground. Oh, and one more thing…travel light so that you’re not breaking a sweat for no reason.
