Washington’s Playground Beckons Curious Road-Trippers

There’s no denying that the USA is scattered with countless superb road trip destinations just waiting to be discovered. When it comes to exploring rugged coastlines, lush green forests, pristine lakes, and untouched expanses of volcanic wilderness with friends, not many areas can compete with the Pacific Northwest. Although nothing prevents you from indulging in a spot of city slicking in places like Seattle or Portland, you definitely want to focus your attention on the well-hidden gem known as Washington’s Playground. Here you will not only discover some of the most exquisite natural scenery in the country, but also have the opportunity to indulge in some of the best wine and craft beer offerings imaginable.

Leavenworth is truly reminiscent of the Alps

A visit to Leavenworth is an absolute must during your Playground road trip. You will be forgiven for thinking you have, somehow, been teleported to a village in the heart of the Alps. Comfortably nestled at the convergence of two crystal-clear rivers, Leavenworth truly is a sight to behold, with its Bavarian architecture and beautiful natural surroundings. Apart from a myriad of bustling little pubs and restaurants serving ice-cold beer and warm pretzels, visitors can also engage in various outdoor activities such as biking, hiking and rafting just a few minutes away from the center of town. Although the village boasts year-round appeal, it truly comes alive in October when the annual Oktoberfest celebrations take place.

Soak up the sun at Lake Chelan

No trip to Washington’s Playground will be complete without a visit to Lake Chelan. During summer, the lake comes alive with skiers and wakeboarders taking to the glassy waters. When you explore the hills and valleys surround the lake, you will also soon realize that you have ventured into one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the USA, and that you are on the doorstep of multiple vineyards beckoning you to come and taste their offerings. Although the roads leading to Lake Chelan are well-maintained, nothing beats hitting the great outdoors in a Land Rover or Lexus SUV, vehicles highly rated by their drivers for space and comfort. A vehicle that sports an innovative range of safety and entertainment features can only make your road-tripping experience even more memorable.

Wenatchee has something for everyone

For road-trippers who want to enjoy the great outdoors while also never being too far away from a decent shopping experience, Wenatchee is the place to be. The largest city in Chelan County, Wenatchee offers visitors everything from gorgeous and somewhat challenging running and biking trails and horseback riding adventures to a host of chain retailers and a large selection of dining options.  Accommodation is varied, and you will be able to choose between a selection of hotels, self-catering units, and bed and breakfast facilities. Although you probably won’t be traveling by plane during your trip, it’s good to know that Pangborn Airport in the city has daily flights to and from Seattle.

The Washington Playgrounds make for the perfect road trip destination. Whether you visit for a day or a month, you are bound to fall in love with one of the nation’s best-kept secrets.

Camping is Always a Good Idea – Best Camping…

With everything going on in the world, getting out of your home in a safe way is something a lot of people are actively trying to do. And what’s the first thing that gets you out of your home, but still gives you the possibility to isolate yourself from others? That’s right, camping.

A lot of people aren’t keen on camping due to the gear requirements it has, but it’s actually far easier to get the right gear than you’d think. For example, synthetic sleeping bags are a great choice for all the locations we’ll be suggesting. Pair one with a tent, and you’re good to go!

So, now that you and your family have decided you want to spend a few nights in the outdoors, where do you go to do that? There is definitely no shortage of places to camp in the US, and to make things a bit easier for you, we’ve got a roundup of some of the best ones.

Yosemite, California

Considered by many to be a camper’s paradise, Yosemite is one of the world’s most popular national parks. There are a lot of fun things to know about Yosemite, but the most important one is that almost 94% of it is untouched wilderness. No roads, no cars, no electricity, and in most cases, no people, so if your goal is to clear your mind and enjoy breathtaking views, it’s the perfect spot.

There are thirteen campgrounds as part of the national park, but if you’d rather go backcountry camping, you can get a free permit and do that, too. If opting for one of the campgrounds, you should keep in mind that the national park is an incredibly popular spot, so a reservation is encouraged. Some of the campgrounds do operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you’d like to visit them, make sure you pick a time when you won’t have too many people.

One thing to keep in mind is that some of the roads that go through the national park are closed over the winter, so if you don’t want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere, do inquire about campground availability. You can contact the national park to check about the one you’d like to head out to, they’ll also be able to give you info on how many people you could expect there.

All things considered, Yosemite National Park is not just one of the best camping places in the US, it’s also one of the best places in the world, and it’s absolutely worth visiting.

Denali, Alaska

Here’s a fun fact about Alaska – you can visit quite a lot of wildlife species if you head out there, and there are some really iconic species and quite a lot of birds. If you’re a fan of wildlife, Denali National Park is going to be perfect for you. The park is home to North America’s tallest mountain, Denali a.k.a. Mount McKinley, and it covers over six million acres of open land for you to explore.

One of the best things about the Denali National Park is the fact that it is suitable for campers and hikers of any skill level. There are plenty of trails that start right at the visitor center and don’t require you to be extremely well prepared. You do also have other trails that start deeper in the park, so there’s something for everyone.

The 291 camping sites are spread across six campgrounds, and backcountry camping is an option too, with a free permit you can obtain. A word of caution here – if you’re going backcountry camping, make sure you’re well prepared, and know what you’re doing. And while we’re talking about the campgrounds, we should mention that only Riley Creek is a campground that you can reach by car.

Denali National Park is usually open throughout the year, but if you’d head out in a private vehicle, you’ll have to do that after mid-April. Also, know that some of the roads are closed during winter (and sometimes during fall), depending on the weather and conditions, but even when that’s the case, there are still plenty of things for you to do.

Shenandoah, Virginia

A stone’s throw from D.C., Shenandoah is a beautiful location that’s perfect for both first-time campers, and experienced ones alike. As part of the national park, you get over 500 miles of trails, and many of them result in you being able to enjoy some incredibly beautiful landscape views. And don’t forget all the waterfalls you’ll see along the way, which are just as beautiful.

The national park has four campgrounds, and it’s good to know that they’re closed during the winter. It’s not a good idea to camp here during the winter due to harsh weather and bad conditions, so they closed it for safety reasons. You should definitely make a reservation if you’re going to be camping here, and as is the case with Yosemite and Denali, you can get a free permit and try backcountry camping.

Overall, Shenandoah is a great place to camp in, and even if you aren’t close to it, you should definitely check it out.
