If you’ve ever been skiing you’ll know that Chalets are the ultimate in ski accommodation. Forget hotel rooms and hostels, there is no better way to enjoy a ski holiday than in the cosy comfort of a chalet. For those of you who haven’t enjoyed a ski chalet yet but are thinking about it well let me enlighten you with my short guide to the Ski Chalet lifestyle.
Chalets are to skiing what Villas are to spanish coastline! Your very own home from home while on ski holiday and European chalets especially are usually beautiful wooden and stone structures with very local architectural influences. They look pretty from the outside and are always cosy and warm on the inside. While chalets are usually a little further away from the slopes than the high priced hotels, you get so much more for your money.
Owing to their larger size, chalets are perfect for groups, families or couples just looking to splash out and celebrate. Chalets can range from accommodating just 4 people, right up to 16 people in some cases. A fully furnished and well equipped home with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Some chalets are a short drive to the chair lifts while others are just a short walk situated in the centre of town. It all depends how much space you want and how much you’re willing to pay for the location. Personally I prefer the chalets further out as you get more floor space for your money with the added possibility of panoramic views of the mountains and valley. Another great aspect of chalet living is that they often come with staff! Yes many chalets offer chef services so when you’re back from the slopes you don’t need to worry about what’s for dinner who is doing the dishes.
We have Colonel Peter Lindsay to thank for this pretty ski resort in the heart of the French Alps. A Scotsman who decided to develop a new resort at the small town of Les Allues. In 1938 the resort opened to the public and has more or less been running ever since. Its one of the most beautiful regions to ski and it’s popularity increases each year. It plays host to a whole bunch of festivals and ski championships so it’s clear you’re in for some great skiing and some world class apres ski. While it may not be the easiest ski resort to get to its well worth the trip and the chalets here are an integral part of the local beauty.
Meribel has 53 lifts of its own with connections to 3 other resorts in the “3 Valleys” region. Yes you heard me, there are 4 resorts in the 3 valleys region. Saint-Bon, Allues (Meribel), Belleville and Maurienne. One ski pass gives you access to all 4 resort areas making it the larges interlinked ski region in the world. That’s more than 370 miles of runs!
While most hotel rooms at ski resorts are the same, it’s fair to say Ski Chalets vary massively. Their size and location can differ affecting the price of course but also their facilities. Some have garages, handy if you’re driving, of course if you’re travelling with a larger group you may need space for multiple vehicles. Unlike hotel rooms you’ll often get to see a floor plan of the chalet which can help you work out who should have what room, how big the lounge area is, etc. All these factors can influence how much you enjoy the chalet experience.
Because chalets offer so much more but require a little more thought and research its best to find a reputable chalet company that can help you find the best to suit your group number and budget. Whether you’re looking for Catered chalets in Meribel for families, groups or just a couple take a look at Les 3 Chalets (Named after the 3 valleys). They have some of the best Meribel ski chalets and there’s a good range of styles and sizes. Without doubt my favourite is Chalet Evergreen which sleeps 16 people! It’s lounge is amazing and the views are pretty epic. It even has a “luxury boot room” to keep your sweaty ski gear after a fun day skiing.
While a ski hotel will be functional and much like any other hotel you’ve ever stayed in, every Chalet has its own charm and character. Chalets transform a ski holiday from something fun to something unforgettable.
